Negotiations with Japan, China agree on joint development of the East China Sea

China has agreed to a treaty with Japan to start formal negotiations, the Treaty will allow the two often and East Asian powers in the disputed waters of joint development of natural gas resources.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during his visit to Tokyo yesterday proposed to start formal negotiations. This seems to indicate that in the long-term stay of joint development plan of the East China sea resources, the Chinese Government is ready to go one step further, to eliminate between Japan and the largest source of friction.

In making this recommendation, the two countries also from maritime security to food safety issues signed a bilateral agreement to further improve the Sino-Japanese relations brought hope.

In 2008, the two countries have agreed to jointly develop the natural gas resources in the East China Sea, however, while Japan has initiated the expansion of specific negotiations to implement the agreement, but in promoting this project, the Chinese Government had not shown any interest in.

According to an insider, the beginning of May this year, China has finally agreed to by the two senior officials to develop natural gas expansion of informal consultations, but the contact display, their attitude was hardly any substantive change.

Japan officials said that at present it is not clear why now calls for the early Wen Jiabao to begin negotiations on international treaties, but the surprise move is welcome.
